Welcome Brad Warner in Our School

Two-day-sesshin with lecture and discussion on 8th and 9th of October

Brad Warner

Brad Warner (* 5. March 1964 in Hamilton, Ohio) is a Zen-teacher and was ordinated in the Sōtō school by Gudō Wafu Nishijima, who learned himself by Kodo Sawaki. He's writing books about Zen and novels, is musician, movie-maker and is running a blog: www.hardcorezen.info . His approach to Zen explores the value of the traditional teaching and practice in our time, without reducing it or being dogmatic. Humor takes an important role here, so that topics like monster movies, sci-fi and punk get part of his discussion.

A sesshin is marked by the intensive practice of Zazen over several days. The translation of Zazen is “just sitting” or “sitting meditation” and describes the cross-legged, meditative sitting in silence, like it is taught in the tradition of Zen. Brad refers to this practice in the title of his second book as “sit down and shut up”. Besides this practice that will take several hours, Brad will give a talk that will lead to a discussion. Additionally, there will be the possibility to have a one-on-one talk (Dokusan) with him. Besides we will have small ceremonies in the beginning and the end.

The practice of Zazen and of Siu Lam Wing Chun go back to a common source: Damo, who is called Bodhidarma in China. He came from India to China and founded there the Chan-Buddhism (Zen), that was brought once again in the 13. century by Dōgen Zenji to Japan. Finally this tradition spread in modern times in the western world, too. The tradition of Zen, as well as the one of Siu Lam Wing Chun remember the story that Damo meditated for nine years, as a sign of his effort to work on himself. In our school, too, a calligraphy refers to this story, whose text hang already in the Shaolin Temple as such as in the first school of Siu Lam Wing Chun, that was founded by Fung Siu Ching (馮小青) in Foshan at the end of the 19th century. This is just one note, that both traditions follow from their core a common philosophy and practice.

Organizational Information

The talk and discussion will be on English. For registration please fill in the registration form. We ask for a financial contribution. Zen is, like Kung Fu, not for sale, but we want to support Brad, who has to finance his travels, as well as our school its rooms. We suggest a contribution between 50€ for people with a small income and 80€ for a normal or high income. Of course you can contribute more if you like. A lack of financial means should be no reason not to be allowed to attend. For food and drinks please take care of your self. The event will last both days from 9 to half past 6 in the evening. In the lunch break, you can join, and we go to eat together. We will send more detailed information about that per mail.
